Volvo Leverages Tesla Supercharger Network for Its EV Expansion in North America
July 05 2023,
In a monumental stride towards its goal of becoming fully electric by 2030, Volvo Cars is the first European car maker to ink a deal with Tesla, thereby unlocking access to Tesla's vast Supercharger network for its EV drivers in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The accord guarantees 12,000 additional fast-charge points, a figure projected to grow with Tesla's ongoing expansion.
From 2025, future Volvo cars will be fitted with the North American Charging Standard (NACS) charging port. Moreover, Volvo Cars' app will enable drivers to locate charging stations, obtain real-time availability updates, and facilitate payments seamlessly.
Volvo CEO, Jim Rowan, highlighted that this deal aims to facilitate the transition to electric driving by addressing the challenge of accessible charging infrastructure. Volvo's current EV line-up, from XC40 and C40 Recharge to the newly unveiled EX30 and EX90, are projected to utilize the Supercharger network via an adapter starting in 2024.
Drivers desiring to charge in the Combined Charging System (CCS) will be accommodated via an adapter provided by Volvo. This alliance complements the tens of thousands of fast-charge points already accessible to Volvo drivers, fostering a more sustainable transportation future.
