What are the Technologies that Make Volvo Vehicles Safer?

Volvo has pioneered a number of safety features that have saved countless lives over the years since they have been in use in almost every car on the road, such as the three-point seatbelt, the side airbags and the autonomous emergency braking. Today, Volvo Cars are still among the safest on Canadian roads due to their advanced technologies.

The Connected Safety

In addition to providing more convenience and practicality, the internet connection of Volvo vehicles is used to improve the safety of their passengers as well as those in other connected vehicles. This cloud-based technology is able to warn drivers of an upcoming potential danger by sharing information with preceding cars. For example, if a connected vehicle detects the road is slippery, it will send a notification to other connected vehicles in the area in order to prepare their drivers for a potentially slippery road. A notification is also sent when a connected vehicle uses its hazard lights, which could also signal danger to other road users.

The Run-Off Road Mitigation

Most new Volvo vehicles are equipped with Run-Off Road Mitigation which is a technology that can steer the vehicle back in its lane and apply the brakes in order to keep it from exiting the pavement due to driver inattention. If a crash occurs and the vehicle is sent off the road anyway, the seatbelts are tightened to keep occupants from flying around the cabin and the advanced Volvo seats are designed to absorb very high vertical impact forces in order to prevent spinal injuries even if the vehicle becomes airborne after hitting a ditch for example.

The Pilot Assist system

Available on many Volvo models, the Pilot Assist system is more than a convenience feature since it also increases the safety of the occupants. Indeed, this system combines the capabilities of the adaptive cruise control and the lane following assist in order to reduce strain on the driver, which means they can stay more alert on long highway trips.
